True Star Foundation is a non-profit organization whose purpose is to inspire dreams so that young people may find their voice, discover their path, and prepare for life. True Star has provided over 3,000 on-the-job training opportunities to Chicago youth through its after school and summer programs. Youth in True Star programs learn skills that allow them to create their own magazines, run their own blog, host and produce their own radio show, shoot and edit digital video, and market the brand. TSF conducts weekly media education programs during school, after school and throughout the summer. Each program simulates a department at a media company and staff and students at TSF's main site work to coordinate activities to produce two quarterly magazines (True Star & True Star Jr.), two weekly radio broadcasts (UBM) and content for its website (www.truestaris.com) and youtube channel (www.youtube.com/truestarmediatv). Topics covered in all disciples of the Media Program revolve around current events in society (locally and globally) and topics that specifically deal with the teen/young adult experience. All the media produced in True Star programs is produced by youth actually learning from doing, making mistakes, and resolving those errors. True Star takes a hands-on approach to problem solving. Through this approach, students will develop key transferable skills, such as flexibility, creativity and communication, which can be employed across all academic subjects, and in future careers. True Star also takes all its media platforms to market and has an audience of over 1 million youth across print, radio, and digital platforms. True Star programs also allow youth to build new connections with others from areas of Chicago they don’t normally interact with. Youth who participate in True Star practice 21st Century Innovation and the Learning Skills 4C’s (communication, collaboration, critical thinking and creativity).
